A (disproportionately long) introductory first chapter will establish working definitions of antibiotics, resistance and environment, as well as briefly describe the known mechanisms underlying resistance and its spread, and the methods used to investigate the presence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in the environment. From there, it will review available evidence of the causes and magnitude of the problem; and why it is a very serious problem indeed.
